ADMIRALS GALLEY
May 3, 1989 - September 20, 2011

Pebble Creek Farm is saddened to announce that the MHHA Hall of Fame, gray Michigan stallion, ADMIRALS GALLEY, died on Tuesday, September 20, 2011. ADMIRALS GALLEY was a staple stallion for many years within the Michigan breeding program and has progeny racing throughout the United States and Canada.
He will be greatly missed. The MSBA send their condolences to the owners and staff of Pebble Creek Farm.

MSU RESEARCHERS NEED HORSES WITH BAD ANKLES

MSU is considering a research project seeking non-invasive and more precise techniques for evaluating arthritis and cartilage deterioration in fetlock joints. Twelve to fifteen horses would be required for this project. Donated horses may be of any age, but must have obvious symptoms of fetlock pathology. Donors can earn a tax deduction for including their horses in the project. As part of the research, horses will have to be euthanized to compare imaged results with actual pathology of the joint. For more information or to offer a horse, contact Dr. John Caron at (517) 353-9710.

NEWS RELEASE FROM GREAT LAKES STANDARDBRED SALE COMPANY -

Bill and Patti Gira, owners and managers of the Great Lakes Sale, regret to announce that there will not be a 2011 yearling sale at the Michigan State University Livestock Pavilion.

We have seen this day coming for the last couple of years as the Michigan breeding industry continues to decline. There are no longer enough consignors interested in a Michigan yearling sale to justify the expense of putting on the sale.

The sale began in 1997 and after 13 years, 1,452 Standardbred yearlings were sold for a total of $8,201,750 for an average of $5,648.

We would like to thank all of our consignors and buyers for many successful years. Many state champions and other outstanding performers hat went on to compete at the highest level across the country passed through the Great Lakes Sale ring.

We continue to be active in the Michigan breeding program here at Oldfield Farm. We have developed a good relationship with our state legislators and are working hard through both the Michigan Harness Horseman's Association and the Michigan Standardbred Breeders Association to help the breeding industry recover and grow again. We would both encourage all breeders and horsemen to get involved with their legislators and the two Standardbred associations and become members to make a difference.

Last year, the Detroit resident won 603 races and ranked No. 6 among all drivers in North America. ADMIRALS EXPRESS - RECIPIENT OF THE 2010 CAM FELLA AWARD.

The connections of ADMIRALS EXPRESS were presented their Cam Fella Award at the annual O'Brien Awards Banquet on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Delta Meadowvale Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario. The wonder pacer, affectionately known as the 'The Grey Gladiator,' won this award, which recognizes extreme recent meritorious service to the Canadian harness racing industry.

ADMIRALS EXPRESS was owned by Ed and Cheryl Sayfie and Laurel and Gary Gust of Michigan. He was trained by Mike Hales and driven in most of his races by Paul MacDonell.

Admirals Express, by ADMIRALS GALLEY of Pebble Creek Farm, enthralled the racing industry and fans with his on-track performances, but his connection to fans and horse people transcended his ability on the racetrack. His indomitable spirit, the emotion he evoked, and the excitement he stirred within us when he raced made ADMIRALS EXPRESS unique and somewhat of an icon within the Canadian harness racing industry.

His performances on the racetrack were superb. They included 353 starts, 86 wins, 14 sub-1:50 wins and $2.1 million in purse earnings. Read more...

IN MEMORY - Robert W. Huff, 90, dies Wednesday, December 22, 2010.


Bob Huff was the founder and long-time board member of the Michigan Standardbred Breeders Association. We at the MSBA are greatly saddened by his death and would like to offer our condolences to his family.

Bob was "Shiawasee Farm" and the breeder of Hambletonian winner, SHIAWAY ST. PAT. He was a long-time member of the USTA where he held a position on the Board of Directors for 32 years. He became an expert on Standardbred breeding and pedigrees and started a consulting firm titled, Huff's Standardbred Service.

Bob had many other accomplishments within the Standardbred industry. He was a member of the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame, authored the Michigan Colt Stakes legislation , served on the Board of Directors of the MHHA, was the co-founder of the Michigan 4-H Standardbred Program, was the recipient of the Harness Horse Youth Foundation's Service to Youth Award in 1984, and served as chairman of the Michigan Governor's Horse Racing Advisory Council. In addition, he was part-owner of the Michigan Standardbred Sale and the Blooded Horse Sale Companies.

Bob Huff contributed as much to the sport of harness racing as anyone could in their lifetime and will be greatly missed.
